Las Vegas, Nevada neurologist, Dr. Margaret Goodman’s first experience in unarmed combat sports came when she was asked to perform a neurological consultation in 1993 on a high-profile boxer whose bout was canceled the night of the fight due to dizziness. She has remained a strong advocate for fighter health and safety ever since.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Goodman grew up in Southern California. She received a B.A. from University of California at Los Angeles in 1975, a M.D from Chicago Medical School in 1984, completed an Internal Medicine internship and a residency in Neurology in a combined program through the West Los Angeles VA and UCLA in 1988. Few, if anyone, has the medical expertise and experience in unarmed combat sports more than Dr. Edwin “Flip” Homansky, who was granted the rarely-bestowed James A. Farley Award by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 2006 in recognition of a career marked by “honesty and integrity.”
Born in Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Homansky received his B.A. from Tulane University in 1972, his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in 1976 and an Internal Medicine residency in 1979. Dr Kamm is an adult and adolescent psychiatrist in private practice in Oakhurst, NJ and is a distinguished life fellow of the American psychiatric association. Dr. Kamm sub-specializes in sport psychiatry, and has been lecturing nationally and internationally on the subject since the 1970s. In addition to consulting with high school and college teams, he has treated elite athletes in all sports, and was the sport psychiatrist for the Jersey Shore Cats of the USBL, a minor league basketball team coached by NBA hall of famer Rick Barry.
Sharon is a graduate of The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology with a Doctoral degree in Psychology. One of the populations of clients she works with are men and women trying to get into recovery from drugs and alcohol or stay in recovery. Her theoretical orientation is cognitive/behavioral. This orientation stresses intervention in thoughts and behaviors to re-frame the client’s belief systems. It enables them to go from irrational thinking to more rational thinking and then more rational coping strategies.
Sharon is a member of The American Psychological Association, The New Jersey Psychological Association; Monmouth County Psychological Association and The Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists.
Dr. Rizzo received his B.S. in Biology with Honors from the University of Chicago and his M.D. from Northwestern University. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and is specialty board certified. A former collegiate wrestler, he volunteered as an assistant varsity wrestling coach and team physician at Marist High School for 13 years, and is the author of the book “Championship Nutrition and Performance”, was a contributing author for the book “The Arsenal: The Wrestler’s Training Log” by NCAA National Champion Alan Fried, and edited the ARP English to Spanish Manual for Ringside Personnel. He is formerly a clinical instructor of medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Active in professional boxing and mixed martial arts ringside medicine, he is on the board of the Association of Ringside Physicians, is the recipient of the 2011 Dr. Michael Schwartz Award for Dedicated Service to the Association of Ringside Physicians, and also acts as the physician member on the State of Illinois Athletic Commission Board.
